How do you know if you are eligible for disability benefits?

On Behalf of | Jun 17, 2018 | Social Security Disability |

When a Texas individual finds that he or she is no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition, it can signal financial struggles for the entire family. If you are a person who is no longer able to work regularly or earn a sufficient income to support yourself, you may know there are legal options available that could allow you secure financial support.

Through a disability claim with the Social Security Administration, you may be able to obtain benefits through Social Security Disability Insurance. Simply having a serious medical condition is not enough to qualify for these benefits. It involves a complex application process, and the SSA has strict requirements for what qualifies as a disabling medical condition.

Who is eligible to seek these benefits?

If you cannot work because you suffered a serious injury or you have a medical condition that prevents you from working as you did before, you may assume that you qualify as disabled. There are only certain medical conditions that qualify you for SSDI benefits. The SSA considers the following qualifying disabling medical conditions:

  • Certain respiratory illnesses, such as cystic fibrosis or serious cases of asthma
  • Cardiovascular conditions, such as heart disease or heart failure
  • Loss of ability to speak or loss of vision
  • Digestive issues, which can include inflammatory bowel disease
  • Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and other types of neurological disorders
  • Mental disorders, including severe depression, types of mental disabilities and more

If you think you may qualify, you would be wise to start by seeking a complete evaluation of your case in order to understand how you can move forward with your application. The process can be complex and confusing, but you have the right to experienced legal guidance as you pursue the benefits to which you have a rightful claim.

What happens next?

If you determine that you qualify for disability benefits and move forward with the application, that is not necessarily the only steps you will have to take. Unfortunately, many initial claims come back denied, and some people may need to request a reconsideration of their claim or pursue other steps to secure benefits.

Eligibility requirements for benefits from the SSA are strict, and it is beneficial to be fully aware of your rights and options before you move forward. This simple step can help you avoid unnecessary complications and certain types of missteps that can lengthen the application process.
